Some key aspects of driver’s education, road test preparation, and requirements

To prepare for the Official Road Skills Driving Test, make sure you complete your driver’s education program (including classroom and behind-the-wheel training) and practice driving in various conditions. You’ll need to demonstrate safe driving skills, responsible behavior, and defensive driving techniques. Also, familiarize yourself with Connecticut’s traffic laws to ensure you pass the road test smoothly.

In Connecticut, you must be at least 16 years old to apply for a learner’s permit. After holding your permit for 90 days, you can take the road skills test and obtain your driver’s license. If you’re under 18, certain restrictions apply until you turn 18.

For the DPS Authorized Road Test, you’ll need to bring:

  • A valid learner’s permit (if you’re under 18).

  • Proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or passport.

  • Proof of residency, like utility bills or rental agreements.

  • Social Security card (if applicable).

  • The ADE-1317 certificate or any other completion certificates from your driver’s education program.

Make sure to check your local DMV website for any additional requirements.

Yes, you can take the DPS Authorized Road Test with your own car, as long as it is roadworthy and properly insured. The vehicle will also need to have valid registration and be in good condition for the test. Make sure the car has working lights, brakes, and functional signals.

If you fail the DPS Authorized Road Test, don’t worry. You’ll be able to retake the test, but you’ll need to wait for a set period (usually 7 days) before scheduling a second attempt. To improve your chances of passing, consider scheduling a few extra practice sessions to refine any areas you found challenging during your test.
